Since few days I have been watching and hearing lots of stuff about Jayalalitha's conviction.
I am 25 years old and according to law I am eligible to vote and do have my voter's card.
Till date I never got chance to vote for some or other reasons but I always try to be updated about the political scenario in our country.
However , from whatever little knowledge I have got have tried to pen down my thoughts.
The verdict given by the special court for Jayalalitha's disproportionate assets case to send her to prison for 4 years have had many repercussions in the society especially Tamilnadu(obviously her territory!)
Her supporters , 16 of them tried suicide and some of them even tried to immolate themselves. Isn't is stupid? These things sadden me as I do not get the logical reason behind doing that and only thing I understand is people's mentality to idolize someone without having any kind of rational thinking. And that too educated people also have lost this ability of rational thinking. This is crap!!
People have been protesting through rail roko and fasts but does that make any sense? I see people, especially ladies , wearing chains and rings with Jayalalitha's image in it. It disturbs me to see people putting such blind faith and following and supporting them by refusing to believe in the verdict given by judiciary system.
Several people were involved in this case right from A R Rehman and others who performed in this extravagant worth-few-crores wedding of Jayalalith's foster son. Their statements were recorded and taken into considerations.
The case went on for more than 10 years when it was first lodged by Subramaniam Swamy. The wedding was held in 1995 when Jayalalitha was CM of Tamilnadu and as any educated Indian would know what could be the legitimate earnings of a CM , the actual money spent on the wedding was way more than that! Even the invitations sent were with a silver plate and silk saris or dhotis in it. Jayalalitha and her confidante were laden with gold and diamond from head to toe.
Why cant people understand that instead of being mesmerized by such events and extravagant celebrations , why cant they introspect and think where this money came from?
Isn't it their own money? The tax paid by them on the legitimate earnings they have ? Their efforts ? Swamy proved it using all the evidences he had. If a person can take on the entire process , are not we responsible to give it a little time and think over what happened and accept it?
Why all this drama of protest ? Why idolize someone who has used your money for her own personal reasons and is still being unapologetic about it?
Few people might defend it by saying that Jayalalitha has done lots of good work and that is the reason they support her. This is where people make mistake. To do good work was her responsibility and job and we should not look at it as favor on us. Her good work could not be the reason behind ignoring her involvement in all other bad things. We need to change our mentality and look at things from different perspectives.
The entire blame is just not on her but its equally on the people! We ! The so called biggest democracy in the world who fails to realize where do the power of democracy lies! Electing someone has become equivalent to idolize someone! No wonder people down in south also have temples for their beloved movie stars!
In order to develop logical thinking the first thing we have to stop is idolizing someone. I am big supporter of Modi but that does not mean I idolize him.
There is a fine line between supporting and idolizing someone. And as a responsible citizen of the biggest democracy in the world , its time to not only understand but to implement it in practical.
Kudos to Indian Judiciary system for taking on such people and keep our faith alive in it!! Can see a ray of hope as a youth of my country!!
